Leading with Compassion: The Story of Aunty Rach

Introducing Rachel Our Program Coordinator

Meet Rachel, our Program Coordinator and the backbone of all we do at the LIVEfree Project. Known affectionately in the community as Aunty Rach, she is a friend to many and a reliable support for those in need.

Her warmth, dedication, and expertise have made her an integral part of our team and a trusted figure in the community.

We decided to take the time to ask Rachel some questions about how she arrived at this pivotal role and what has shaped her journey in community services.

How Did You End Up in This Space of Work?

As a single mother of two, I understand firsthand the complexities and challenges of raising a family while striving for personal and professional growth. My qualifications in Counselling, Trauma, Grief, Working with Communities, and Case Management have been invaluable assets both personally and professionally.

My early years were spent living with my grandparents before moving to a housing commission house in Mount Druitt. Growing up in a close-knit, generationally connected family, I learned the value of community and the importance of knowing who your people are and being there for them.

My path into Community Services was deeply influenced by the trauma my children and I experienced. Although I was already studying, had a heart for community work and everything LIVEfree Project stands for, it was the trauma that solidified my commitment.

Chris Jones, the Director of LIVEfree Project, was there for us during our darkest times, offering support and empowering me to make difficult choices that ultimately protected and healed my family. This experience led me to major in counselling and trauma, with a clear goal of being there for others as they navigate life's challenges.

I began my career at the LIVEfree Project by coordinating our Inspire Program, an adult resilience and creative education initiative that empowers women to move forward into a better life. I then got involved in our Backyard Brekky Program, and my role continued to grow. For the past two years, I have served as the Program Coordinator at the LIVEfree Project.

What Is One Story You've Never Forgotten and Why?

There are countless people and stories that have profoundly impacted my life.

One story that stands out is that of a young girl who endured a difficult time involving domestic violence that required police intervention.

Once a social and outgoing girl, she withdrew after the incident and was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. She stopped going to school and struggled with social interactions, even with extended family.

It was during this period that she joined our Mentoring program. Over two years, she connected with her mentor and worked hard to engage with the program. Today, she is thriving academically, mentally, and socially. She has taken on a leadership role at school and has independently applied for her first job. Her strength, resilience, and determination have been a profound inspiration to me, often encouraging me through my own difficult times.

What Is Something You Would Love to See in the Future in This Line of Work?

Looking ahead, I dream of a community services sector that is adequately funded. While crisis intervention is incredibly important, I believe the focus should also be on long-term support and recovery.

This approach will allow us to truly change generational narratives and cycles, creating lasting impact and empowerment for future generations.

Closing Thoughts

My journey has been shaped by both personal trials and professional triumphs, all leading me to a deep commitment to community service.

At LIVEfree Project, we strive to make a lasting difference, and it is my hope that through continued support and dedication, we can build a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Together, we can create a stronger, more resilient community.
