In early 2023, Zoe joined the Shine On Mentoring Program with LIVEfree Project.
She came to us struggling with school attendance, social skills, a history of self- harm, depression, and severe anxiety due to trauma.
From the beginning, Zoe worked closely with one of our experienced, trauma-trained Mentors on a fortnightly basis.
Their one-on-one sessions covered topics like identity, self-esteem, processing grief, and building social and life skills.
LIVEfree Project's holistic approach connected Zoe to various social experiences, fostering positive relationships and boosting her confidence. She also engaged in other programs offered by LIVEfree Project, which further helped improve her school attendance and overall wellbeing.
One of the Mentors reflects on Zoe's journey with LIVEfree Project and recalls attending her Year 10 Graduation Assembly at the end of last year, where Zoe received her ROSA Certificate, as well as awards for high attendance and Most Improved Academically.
"The sense of joy I had watching her complete this milestone, knowing the journey that had gone before, and how difficult it had been to come back from that, was breathtaking. The resilience, the growth, and the tangible change in her were a testament that with the right help, anything is possible. To say I am proud is an understatement. She is an incredible young person!"
This year, through the Shine On Mentoring Program, Zoe has worked with her Mentor to further her life skills in the search for a job. Zoe experienced a few setbacks in applying for TAFE and looking for work. This was hard for her to navigate and brought back some feelings of hopelessness. However, through regular support, conversations around resilience, dealing with disappointment, and preparing for the future, Zoe successfully applied for over 10 jobs, interviewed, and secured a Traineeship in Childcare.
She is the first in her family to graduate from school and gain employment.
Shine On has changed the trajectory of Zoe's story. It has brought out the best in her, helping her recognise and understand her potential and purpose while connecting her to community and relationships that have changed her for the better.
Zoe says, "I'm kicking a lot of goals, and I'm really proud of myself. I wouldn't be where I am if I didn't meet the people here. They have changed my life, and they have become my people."
The Shine On Mentoring Program not only helped Zoe achieve her personal goals but also empowered her to build a brighter future.
LIVEfree Project's approach ensures that every participant is supported holistically, focusing on their emotional, social, and practical needs. By fostering resilience and a sense of belonging, Shine On creates lasting change in the lives of young people, enabling them to rewrite their stories and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
Shine On is more than just a program; it is a transformative journey that empowers young people to overcome adversity and achieve their dreams. Through targeted support and skill-building, the program equips participants with the tools they need for a successful and fulfilling life.
This success story of Zoe highlights the profound impact that Shine On Mentoring Program can have, illustrating the power of community, connection, and unwavering support in changing lives for the better.
